Tell us about yourself:
I was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1960, during the Civil Rights Movement. As a conceptual artist specializing in watercolor, my journey into the fine arts began at the age of fourteen. Over the past fifty years, I have explored both visual and conceptual expression, with my life experiences serving as the core inspiration behind my work. Each painting I create is a reflection of those personal experiences, which continue to drive and inform my artistic practice.
Where were you raised?
As mentioned earlier, I was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and began my artistic journey at the age of fourteen. Throughout my life, I’ve lived in various places, including Alabama, Texas, Massachusetts, Germany, the Philippines, and eventually settled in Southern California. As a conceptual artist specializing in watercolor, my work has evolved over the past fifty years, blending both visual and conceptual elements. My personal experiences are at the heart of my art, with each painting reflecting those experiences and continually shaping and inspiring my creative process.
What is your specific style?
I believe every artist eventually finds their unique style, though it’s a process that unfolds over time. I’m still growing and evolving. I began with line and shape, and over time, I’ve transitioned to exploring color, composition, as well as context and purpose.
What is your preferred medium?
I specialize in watercolors, but as I mentioned before, I am continuously evolving and exploring different mediums.
What has influenced your art?
My life experiences, from childhood to the present, have shaped me in countless ways. Every day, every year, and every experience—whether positive or negative—has the potential to influence a piece of art. The emotional journey, from moments of joy to the deepest pain, can create work that is raw, authentic, and truthful.
What’s up with Grams 13 in some of your pieces?
I incorporate "Grams 13" into many of my paintings for a meaningful reason. This person, known as Grams, had a profound impact on my life and helped ground me in my work. The number 13 symbolizes the year 2103, and for now, we can leave it at that as a tribute to her influence.
Where do you go from here?
As an artist, the journey is ever-evolving. Moving forward, I continue to explore new techniques and push the boundaries of my work, always seeking fresh ways to express my experiences. I aim to deepen my exploration of both the visual and conceptual elements, potentially integrating other mediums more fully into my practice. The future holds endless possibilities, whether it's through collaboration, embracing old techniques to new technologies, or expanding my narrative to include even more layers of meaning. The process of discovery is ongoing, and I look forward to where it will take me.
